Label changes were mandated by the FDA to various painkiller manufacturers regarding risks involving their products. The warnings were sent to all makers of NSAIDS, both prescription and over the counter. Warnings must include information about risk of gastrointestinal bleeding and increased risk of heart disease.
The unfortunate deaths directly associated with Vioxx were the catalyst for the tough new labeling laws.
There are options, as mentioned in past newsletters; much of pain associated with joints and arthritis is inflammation. There are many natural anti- inflammatory and pain control substances that are excellent and safe to use.

Researchers in Belgium show that simple, natural and inexpensive Vitamin D lowers C- Reactive protein, a measure of inflammation in the body. The studies indicated that even small amounts of Vitamin D, about 500 IU, lowered inflammation by more than 25% in a small group of critically ill patients.
In another study, researchers found that Vitamin D deficiency is associated with increased inflammation in healthy people. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with numerous illnesses with inflammatory components, such as hypertension, heart disease, diabetics and autoimmune illness.
It is important to note that Vitamin D's anti-inflammatory action in humans have long been suspected. Several studies using compounds similar to Vitamin D have shown significant reduction in inflammation besides improving the condition of patients suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis!!

What is cheap, easy to use, accessible, can be taken internally for a variety of ailments and (according to Dr. Patrick Quillin author of many books on nature's wonder medicines) can be applied externally for all kinds of cosmetic, disinfectant purposes and jobs around the house. That Panacea for health is Apple Cider Vinegar.
As Dr. Quillin mentions in his book "Amazing Honey, Garlic and Vinegar", (Leader Co. Inc), Vinegar was first discovered 10,000 years ago, when they found that some foods fermented into alcohol and then into vinegar. Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, prescribed vinegar often for his patients. Ancient Persian physicians would recommend a drink of vinegar, limejuice and sour fruit juice to help prevent fatty accumulation in the body.
One of the most important aspects of good health is to keep acids in balance in the body. The Ph of the body can determine a person's attraction to certain viruses and diseases.
Dr. Quillin suggests by using Apple Cider Vinegar regularly helps to strengthen a balanced and strong acid environment in the stomach, which improves digestion and absorption of foods.

"Given the implication of aluminum and Alzheimer's, I've wrestled over the years with the use of commercial antiperspirants / deodorants, not wanting to put myself at risk with their aluminum content, and also not wanting to risk offending a client. So I chose to continue use of the commercial products, clean up the rest of my act as best I could, and take my chances. A few months ago I read a small piece in the Alternatives newsletter, wherein a reader named Jessica who, as I, had tried the non-aluminum, health-food-stores brands to no avail shared that she'd mixed equal parts baking soda and cornstarch, dusted under her arms "as needed", and solved the problem. "It won't stain your clothes," she added. About a month ago I decided to give it a try, trying it first, of course, on a light weekend day. Not a bead of sweat and no odor at all. Soon I used the powder on a full workday (with a fresh shirt ready), and voila! - No sweat, no odor. Now the mix of baking soda and cornstarch is what I use every day with complete confidence. Just wanted to share."-Larry Witzleben, Orlando, Florida Massage Practitioner

Dear Charoula,For the last few years I have suffered from the condition know as Acid Reflux. My main symptom was heartburn, and I took several kinds of antacids in order to lessen it. Some worked for a while but nothing was truly helpful. Then, a few months ago, I started having indigestion, stomach pain, bloating and diarrhea. My doctor said it was ulcers, put me on a course of antibiotics, and prescribed Nexium. The symptoms went away, but within two three months returned. Is there anything I can do herbally to put an end to this situation?
Answer:
It sounds like you have been suffering from an over acid stomach condition for a while now, beginning with Acid Reflux. This is a very common condition nowadays and has to do mostly with the foods we eat, fats, sweets, and lots of protein. This condition, if untreated, can deteriorate into Ulcers.
The first thing I would do in your place is become aware of my diet. Do you eat a lot of foods containing refined sugar, white flour, and animal fats? Is your red meat protein intake on the high side? If your answer is yes, start by cutting down on all these foods. They are highly acidic, and eat away at the lining of the stomach. Instead, begin substituting chicken and fish, honey as a sweetener, and whole-wheat breads and cookies. Increase your vegetable intake, as veggies naturally alkalinize our system and reverse an acidic condition.
Drugs such as hormones; calcium channel blockers, smooth muscle relaxants and many more, may affect the tone of the esophagus and the lining of the stomach. Consult with your doctor and see what, if anything, you might be able to cut down.
Herbally speaking, Anti-inflammatory and Demulcent herbs will helps soothe the irritation of the digestive system.
- Chamomile tea is excellent and mild enough to use even during pregnancy. Chamomile soothes inflamed tissues. It contains mucilage and essential oils, which counteract ulceration. It is also a mild antispasmodic.
- Licorice, mainly as tea, is probably the best anti-inflammatory we have for anything involving the upper gastric system, including the stomach. High in flavonoids, it has been used since ancient times for ulcers. It increases mucus and improves blood flow in the stomach lining.
- Slippery Elm and Marshmallow Root and leaves also contain a lot of mucilage that may be of help. Prepare as a cold tea to get most of the benefits these berbs offer.
- Meadowsweet contains salicylates, which help with pain, and it also helps with acid indigestion.
With Ulcers, often these are an infecting agent such as H. Pylori, which can exacerbate the situation. It sounds like your doctor suspected H. Pylori, which is why he prescribed antibiotics.
- Goldenseal contains alkaloids, which are antibiotics and can help eradicate H.Pylori bacteria.
- Echinacea is also a strong antibacterial.
- Digestive aids, such as Enzymes, are highly recommended to break down foods and assist with foods being digested and flowing the proper way.
Hope this is of help.

Did you know that you are water? As a fetus you were 99% water. When you were born, you were 90% water. Now, as an adult, you are about 70% water. The human brain is 75% water, bones are 22% water and even tooth enamel is 2% water. Like the earth itself, nearly three-fourths of our entire body consists of water. Because we are water, we can use water to heal and rejuvenate ourselves.
Water cleanses, water purifies and pure water helps the body to detoxify. Other therapeutic values of water include helping the body to remove fatigue, enhancing the glow of the skin and helping to prevent constipation. Other benefits attributed to water are increased stamina, aiding the heart to pump, helping the digestion to flow as well as keeping the body cool.
Sometimes people have dry skin and unquenchable thirst even though they drink lots of water. The deeper physiology is that they are not getting enough moisture into the system. This occurs when mucus blocks the micro channels that carry water to the cells. In order to clear the mucus blocks, an Ayurvedic Tea made of 2 quarts water, 3 teaspoons. Mint leaves and ½ tsp. Bishop's Weed helps the body to clear the mucus and balance the desire for more water.
How much water you should drink depends on your age, how much physical work or exercise you do, the either, your diet, your stress levels, your herbal food supplements and your body type. Pitta or fiery type people tend to need m ore water than Kapha or water type people. Vata or airy are often constipated or have dry skin and need to drink more water.
We must have water to survive. We were born from it, and all life depends on it. We are watery creatures living on a watery planet. Water is the essence of life. So, not only do we need to protect this natural resource, we need to appreciate the healing effects it has on our bodies and on our planet; this unique and amazing substance we call water.

Coughing, wheezing bronchial infection, puffy eyes and unbearable chest congestion are all part of the chronic conditions of allergies and asthma. The five million to six million children who suffer with asthma is the largest (and growing) group affected by the disease. Asthma is the number one cause of hospitalization for children under the age of 15. According to Energy Times, "The rate of asthma among children five to 14 years old increased 74 percent between 1980 and 1994; the rate of preschool kids skyrocketed by 160 percent." According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation, the fatality rate from asthma among children five to 14 years old doubled from 1979 to 1995.
What has happened to drastically increase these conditions? Is it environmental pollution, poor diet, antibiotics and drub use, unsafe living conditions in our homes and schools? Has the air quality in our cities changed so much that it could affect a 160 percent increase in asthma among preschool children?
Many researchers are saying that our current rise in breathing problems is directly linked to pollution. Automotive exhausts, radon, secondary cigarette smoke, chemical cleaners, hairsprays- the list goes on. We constantly clear our throats, sniffle, wheeze and blow our noses, while not paying any attention to the fact that the air we breathe may be slowly suffocating us. The American Lung Association says deaths from breathing problems have increased more than 61 percent since 1979. Why?
Antibiotic drug use and vaccines have also been associated with the epidemic of asthma in children. Vaccines and antibiotics can actually negatively affects the immune system.
In a recent report from the Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients, several points were made that clearly show why drugs and especially vaccines can cause immune deficiency in children, leading to asthmatic response:
The question is simple: How many vaccines, antibiotics and other-the-counter drugs can an infant or child handle before suffering severe damage to the immune system, resulting in chronic conditions like asthma? Dr. Howard Urnovity, the science director of the Chronic Illness Research Foundation says, " There appears to be a limit on how much foreign material the human body can be exposed to before some level of genetic damage occurs and a chronic disease initiates."
Have we compromised the overall health of our children for the sake of disease-specific immunity? An example of this is the Hepatitis B vaccination that is being required of every child, before four to five years old. It's new, untested and the side effects are just being recognized.
These are always options. First and foremost, ask questions, do not accepts the fact that every medication and vaccine is safe. What are the side effects? Do the benefits outweigh the potential harm?
Second, become familiar with herbal remedies, homeopathic natural medicine and vitamins and minerals that will support the body's immune system.
Third, advocate for your children. Find holistic and integrative healthcare practitioners who may look at your child individually and who will consider their specific needs.
Fourth, be aware, become educated and understand that there is a correlation between environmental and drug induced illnesses like asthma. Yes, we can create our own diseases.
Natural approaches are available:
Breathing is not optional. Become aware of your breath, your breathing patterns, and recognize early signs of trouble. This will change an unconscious pattern to a conscious one. Conscious breathing becomes conscious healing: Change your breath, change your life.

*Compiled by the Art of Well Being.Healing Touch
Is a healing approach that uses light touch from the practitioner to channel healing energy
Therapeutic Touch
Is similar to healing touch, but in therapeutic touch no physical contact is involved, since the human energy field extends outwards beyond the skin, the assessment and clearing of any imbalances and/or blockages is accomplished by moving he hands just above the skin/\. The intention of the practitioner to heal or to reduce pain generates a directed energy into the patient's field. Developed by Delores Krieger, Ph.D., RN, and by Dora Hung at New York University's Division of Nursing: Derived from the 'laying on of hands' tradition.
Toning
Vocalizing long, sustained sounds using a vowel, a consonant, or combination f both without melody, words, beat or rhythm. Toning, an ancient method for pain relief and for treating illness is one of the oldest forms of healing: Also known as sounding, toning is the simplest form of singing. Toning produces vibrations with overtones, or 'vocal harmonics', which help restore harmony of body, mind and spirit.
The Trager Approach
Is a subtle, rhythmic, non-invasive neuro-muscular integration, developed by Milton Trager, MD. A practitioner guides the client in gentle movement facilitating effortlessness. These repetitive, non-intrusive motions tap into the body/mind's memory of felling easy and pain free. The movement can be done while the client is fully clothes and standing, sitting, or lying on a table.
Trigger Point Therapy
(A.k.a Myotherapy or neuromuscular Therapy) applies concentrated finger pressure to "trigger points"- painful irritated areas in muscles- in order to break the cycle of spasm and pain. Used for specific treatment of pain.
Watsu
Is experienced in a very warm (approx. 94 degrees) pool where the client is held in the water by the practitioner and moved using the water to massage the body. Shiatsu (acupressure) points are stimulated along the meridians of the body during the massage.
Yoga
Is an ancient Indian mind/body practice, which traditionally prescribes physical postures and movements (asana), breath work (pranayama) diet, ethics, concentration and meditation in order to live skillfully and to achieve emancipation (Samadhi). The many branches of yoga stress various practices, ranging from Hatha Yoga's emphasis on asana, to Raja Yoga's emphasis on meditation, to Bakti Yoga's emphasis on devotion.
