Spinach

E-Coli and Bagged Veggies

Stop Using Bagged Lettuce, Spinach, and Veggies???

Lea Thompson, Chief Consumer Correspondent from NBC News reported on the unseen danger in bagged salads, She reported from Dr. Steve Swanson that E. Coli comes from animal or, sometimes, human feces and is usually associated with undercooked ground beef. But, Dr. Swanson said, that most people are not aware that next to ground beef, lettuce is the most commonly implicated food item for E.C Coli 0157 infections.

Dr. Robert Brackett, head of food safety at the FDA says he is worried about E. Coli contamination of produce, especially lettuce.

Ideas – What To Do
  1. Buy organic produce from local stores (ask about what farms the produce comes from).
  2. Wash all produce well (spray with liquid colloidal silver after washing and/or use veggie soap for washing.
  3. Let the produce dry well after washing.
  4. Wash your hands before handling all produce.
  5. Steaming veggies can also help.

VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY

Many scientists believe vitamin D deficiency is an un recognized epidemic worldwide. In the United States, experts are calling for revisions to the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) vitamin D recommendations, which are outdated.

The FDA recommends 200 IU of Vitamin D daily for those under 51 and 400 IU for those 51 to 70. However, researchers say the recommendations should be around 1,000 IU daily for all ages and perhaps as high as 2,000 IU.

Remember getting out in the sun daily is important- You can get some of your Vitamin D naturally.

Wheatgrass

Try Wheatgrass: What is Wheatgrass?

Wheatgrass is a plant that is grown from the red winter wheatberry seed. The fresh-squeezed juice of the grass produces high concentrations of chlorophyll, active enzymes, vitamins, minerals and amino acids. It is true that 1 oz. Of wheatgrass juice has the nutritional equivalent of 2 ½ lbs. Of green leafy vegetables. It is one of the richest natural sources of vitamins A, B complex, B-17, C, E & K, Additionally, it is an excellent source of calcium, potassium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, sodium, sulfur, cobalt, zinc, as well as 17 forms of amino acids and enzymes.

WHY IS CHLOROPHYL IMPORTANT?
Chlorophyll , which makes up over 70% of the solid content of wheatgrass juice, is the basis of all plant life and closely resembles the molecular structure of human red blood cells. Chlorophyll is the first product of light containing more light energy than any other element. It can be extracted from any plant but, wheatgrass is superior because it has been found to have over 100 elements needed by the human body.

WHY ARE ENZYME IMPORTANT FOR GOOD HEALTH?
Enzymes play an important role in many bodily functions including vision, thought, reproduction, breathing, and digestion, just to mention a few. The enzymes found in wheatgrass have been found to supplement the indigenous enzymes manufactured in the human body. Also, preliminary studies have identified a number of substances in wheatgrass juice that are formidable anti-cancer agents.

ARE THERE ANY POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS WHEN FIRST BEGINNING TO DRINK WHEATGRASS JUICE?
Wheatgrass juice is a powerful cleanser. Because chlorophyll release toxins in to the bloodstream that have been stored in cells and fatty tissue, you may experience nausea. It is best to start with ounce of juice each day. Every person has an individual tolerance to the potency of wheatgrass juice. Once you have established your personal comfort zone, feel free to drink 2 to 4 ouces as a daily supplement or as much as 6 uonces three times a day for chronic illness. For best results, wheatgrass juice should be drunk first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. However, it is better to drink wheatgrass juice under any condition then not to drink it at all. Pleas note: Your juicer must be specifically designed for wheatgrass. For more information or to purchase a wheatgrass juicer, please contact Pure Intentions or your local health food store.

OCTOBER MEDITATION: Maintain the Body Without Having To Overeat

What It Will Do For You

This meditation will build up your circumvent and electromagnetic field. It allows you to draw in free energy (electrons, protons, neutrons) from the universe so that you can maintain your body without having to over eat.

How To Do It

Sit in easy pose (or in a comfortable straight back chair) spine erect, with your arms extended out in front of you parallel to the ground with palms up. (1.) Very slowly move the arms back as far as possible (towards thumbs) keeping them parallel to the ground and keeping the palms up. (2.) Then return the arms very slowly to their original position, so that the sides of the palms almost touch in front of you. Continue (keep palms up all the time).

While you are doing the meditation, imagine the circumvent force coming from the crown charka (top of the head) to the palms. As the palms approach each other, feel and resist their attraction. It is this resistance that builds energy in you.

Continue the meditation for 3-5 minutes. Work up to 11 to 31 minutes. As you end, relax the arms down to your sides, hands at the center of the chest, palms (facing each other) 2-3 inches apart. Move palms back and forth slightly. Feel the attraction between them. Visualize a ball of energy between your palms. Rub your palms together to end.

Essential Herbs

Herbs

Ask Charoula

Hello,
Today, I would like to share a little about the Energy of Herbs.

Energy is at the root of all traditional and ancient medicines: Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, Native American and African Shamanism, ancient Egypt and Greece, and even Western European tradition.

When we use herbs to heal, we are dealing with three different factors:

  • The energy of the herb
  • The energy of the person to be healed
  • The energy of the disease.

Plants can be cooling, warming, or heating. Cooling herbs can be detoxifying, anti-inflammatory, stress reducing. Heating herbs stimulate, revitalize, dry up congestions. Warming herbs build up circulation. Plants can also be Drying or Moist.

In energy medicine, we treat the patient and not the disease. We treat the root cause of the disease and not the symptoms.

For example, Aurvedic Traditional Medicine recognizes three constitutional types:

Vata Pitta Kapha

Each of these types has different attributes and requires herbs with different energetic qualities.

Vata people are usually nervous, mentally unbalanced, disoriented, scattered, anxious, run down. They can suffer from depression, colds, poor breathing, constipation. They need moist and warming herbs. These can be stimulating and nourishing.

Good herbs for Vata:

All mints, lavender, rosemary, lemon balm, ginger, cardamom, GotuKola, Astragalus, Ginseng, Nettles, Oatstraw, Licorice, Slippery Elm. Also some cooling relaxants: catnip, skullcap, chamomile, hops, valerian.

Pitta people are highly motivated, prone to stress, irritable, impatient, suffer from acute emotions, inflammatory conditions (fever, inflamed joints, skin eruptions, spastic colon, ulcers), high blood pressure, liver toxicity. They need cooling, drying herbs. Cooling herbs are bitter and detoxing.

Good herbs for Pitta:

Golden seal, echinacea, burdock, dandelion root, barberry, Gotu kola, oatstraw, Passiflora, St. Johnswort, motherwort, siberian ginseng, licorice, valerian, skullcap.

Kapha people have sluggish emotions, are stuck and often lethargic. They can suffer from phobias/paranoia, fatigue, reproductive problems, lymphatic congestions, chronic conditions. They need Heating and Drying herbs. These usually are stimulants, decongestants, lymph cleansers, and diuretics.

Good herbs for Kaphas:

All mints, basil, peppers/cayenne, garlic, ginger, horseradish, onions, curries, turmeric, cinnamon, mullein, eucalyptus essential oil, elecampane, cleavers, parsley, dandelion, calendula, uva ursi.

Please note that the above is a general overview of the Energetics of Herbs and needs further studying and information. In future columns, we will look at each of these constitutional types with more detail.

The Elemental Cook

Well here it is already - October!!!! Our gardens are still overly abundant with all kinds of beautiful organic produce and fresh herbs. So. you ask yourself "What am I going to do with all these vegetables and herbs still growing?" Never fear the Polarity Chef is here!!! We call it the Sassy Tomato. This is a basic Fire Element recipe and will help with circulation and focused energy!

2 tomatoes, cut in chunks (using a variety of heirloom tomatoes is wonderful)
1 cup of tomato juice (you will be juicing 2-3 fresh tomatoes)
1/2 of a lemon juiced
1 teaspoon freshly grated organic lemon rind
6 fresh basil leaves ( always rinse your basil leaves even from your own organic garden. The outdoor elements may contain debris that isn't that great to digest.)
A pinch of cayenne pepper or a pinch of red pepper flakes ( if you like things spicy add more. I have also experimented with various hot sauces in place of the cayenne/red pepper flakes. The chipotle hot sauce gives this a totally different flavor.

Place the tomato chunks in a freezer bag and freeze them until solid. (Really good idea for all those millions of tomatoes you have - freeze and always be ready to make this juice)
Pour your tomato juice into the blender and add the frozen tomato chunks. As you add the tomato chunks also add the lemon juice, lemon peel, basil and the cayenne/red pepper flakes. Blend on high and serve immediately. When the weather gets cold - experiment by making this hot - just don't freeze the tomatoes - use them in their natural state and warm the juice up after you have blended it.

Tomatoes and lemons are very rich in Vitamin C and bioflavonoids - this they are wonderful in supporting the immune system. As we age we should be more conscious of getting more Vitamin C foods into our bodies.

The Myth Of Early Detection

By Pam Popper

We have all been told by the government, traditional practitioners, and national health agencies, that the key to good health is to have diagnostic tests performed on a regular basis. That way, disease will be detected early and the chances for a "cure" are the greatest at that time.

Time and time again, we are seeing that this is not the case, and that data on the efficacy of screening outcomes is varied. In fact, statements were being made about the efficacy of early detection through diagnostic testing long before any data could be evaluated to determine the truth of the statement – it was just assumed to be true.

According to the authors of an article published in the Annals of Internal Medicine (Harris, et al, "Screening for prostate cancer: an update of the evidence for the US Preventive Services Task Force" Dec 3 2002; 137(11):917-29), screening does not reduce prostate cancer mortality. The researchers also noted that every potential treatment for prostate cancer is associated with well-documented harms and side effects.

A similar analysis published in the Lancet in 2000 (Gotzsche and Olsen, 355:129) found no decrease in breast cancer mortality in Sweden resulting from mammography. The study noted a small decrease in breast cancer mortality, but an overall increase in total mortality. This is most likely due, in my opinion, to the health-destroying nature of the treatments endured by breast cancer patients. In other words, the treatment may get rid of the cancer, but weaken the individual to the place where a recurrence becomes more likely, or the individual is likely to develop other health problems.

Dr. Robert Anderson noted in a recent article on the topic that oncologist John Cairns reported in the 1980’s that fewer than 50% of cancer patients are cured by surgery and that other than Hodgkin’s Disease, childhood leukemias and a few other cancers, no decrease in mortality rate was associated with the use of chemotherapy. His estimation was that only 2-3% of the 400,000 people dying every year from cancer had benefited from chemotherapy.

Another issue is that our focus on diagnostic testing and treatment is most often not accompanied by instruction about lifestyle changes that can prevent or reverse disease. People develop a false sense of security that they are taking excellent care of themselves, when, in fact, their lifestyles place them at high risk for disease development.

This information reinforces why it is so important to focus on preventive care, and on building and maintaining optimum health. Although modern, American medicine does a number of things very well, one of its strengths is not helping people to recover from degenerative disease. Prevention is the best strategy, and in many instances alternative means of care are better strategies for regaining health than medication and surgery.

Energetic Evaluation
Pulse of Life- Part II

by MaryJo Ruggieri, PhD, RPP

Ayurvedic Pulses — Three Principles of Energy
The basic three principles of energy (or three forces) are called Vata (Vayu), Pitta (Pitha) and Kapha (old spelling). When the three forces are in balance and the body is also in a state of balance it is called a tridhatus. Any of the three forces out of balance causes a discord or a dosha. The term tridosha is derived from tri – the three principles of energy or forces, and dosha – a Sanskrit term that represents the three forces: Vayu, Pitha, and Kapha, when they are not in balance (Amber & Babey-Brooke, 1993).

Vata is based on the qualities of Ether/Air, which are the movers and transitions in the body. Air influences the nervous system and our mental activity. Ether influences Air and gives space to movement. Air affects the gases of the body, and if joints are inflamed, lack of space and Ether are involved. Air (Vata) reflects the quickness of the body and movement in all directions. Areas of the body affected by the Air Principle are the shoulders, lungs, kidneys, ankles and colon.

Pitta is based on the heat concepts of the body (Fire). Metabolism, combustion, circulation and digestion are the actions of Pitta. Fire focuses Air and yields heat, brightness, clarity, focus and vitality. Fire is about doing, motivation and a sense of personal power. Areas of the body affected by the Fire Principle are the digestive system, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, heart and thighs.

Kapha is based on the concepts of the mucous systems, regenerative system of the body and body structures (Water/Earth]. Water and Earth are the first line of immune defense in our body. Water needs Fire for warmth, Air for cleansing and Earth for boundaries. Water moves downward, connecting the other elements to Earth. Water/Earth is about attachments and letting go. Areas of the body affected by the Water/Earth Principle are the lymphatic system, secretor glands, generative organs, feet, bones, structure and neck, knees and bowels.

Pulses in Three Dimensions
In Ayurveda, as energy steps down it moves from high vibration to low vibration via the Chakra system while projecting elemental qualities of energy. The three forces of energy stepping down form three primary energy patterns, or three dimensions of energy systems. These three primary dimensions of the body can be assessed using the pulses.

Dr. Stone describes the three dimensions as spatial areas of the energy field patterns.

  • Left-Right – Air Principle (left lateral to right lateral), which affects the ultra-sonic core.
  • Back-Front – Fire Principle (posterior to anterior), affecting the Chakra system.
  • Top-Bottom – Water/Earth Principle (superior to inferior), controlling the surface currents.

How to Identify Pulse Dimensions
When we work with the pulse of a client we are experiencing the body’s inner state of balance. The pulse beating at the root of the thumb is said by many to be the "witness to the soul." Its throbbing shows whether the soul is happy or miserable.

The three basic pulses can be measured at: 1) the wrist (radial pulse) – the root of the thumb; 2) the neck, in direct line down from the Ramus of the jaw; and/or 3) the inside of the heel on the Ether line. The traditional pulse of choice is specifically below the root of the thumb. This pulse correctly tells the condition of the client.

Placement of Fingers
The person doing the assessment uses three fingers of the right hand (Air finger, Fire finger and Water finger). All three fingers are placed two fingers in width below the root of the thumb. Using the left hand, gently press the artery at the elbow and hold the client’s hand in a slanted manner. The touch should be direct, but not to hard, or the pulse will disappear. Take the right (thumb side) pulse for males and left (thumb side) pulse for females.

Pulse Patterns
Pulses have their own patterns: fast, sharp, jumpy, slow or heavy.

  • Vata. Air/Ether is represented by a zigzag pulse. It is detected with the pad of the Air finger (index). The Vata pulse is curvilinear motion (movements like a snake). The beats are above normal (female: 80-100 bpm; male: 70-90 bpm).
  • Pitta. Fire is represented by a jumpy pulse. The Fire finger (middle) is used to detect this pulse. The Pitta pulse resembles a frog leaping forward in a jerky movement. The beats are medium (female: 70- 80 bpm; male: 60-70 bpm).
  • Kapha. Water is represented by a slower pulse. The Water finger (ring) is used to detect this pulse. The Kapha pulse resembles swan- or peacock-like movements. The beats are weaker and below normal speed (female: 60-70 bpm; male: 50-60 bpm).

Things to Consider When Assessing the Pulse

  • Locate the pulses with the center of the finger pad.
  • Check the rhythm — regular, full, scattered.
  • Determine the size of the pulse — feel the artery. Roll it gently to feel size. Look for firm, beaded, or crystal-like qualities.
  • Allow the artery to move freely with limited pressure.
  • Locate the artery by pressing it gently against the bone of the thumb (radius).
  • Rotating the pad of each finger will give you more information on direction of the pulses — front/back, left/right or top/bottom.
  • It is best to read pulses before eating, drinking or exercising. Practitioner and client should sit very quietly and not engage in conversation.

Test Your Mind-Body-Spirit Aptitude

By Christina Ross, BA, BS, RPP

When was the last time you tested your Mind-Body-Spirit aptitude? Fortunately for us, our Mind-Body-Spirit (M-B-S) connection continues to grow for as long as we live. This connection is constantly maturing and learning how to deal with others, whether it’s our significant others, our children, our parents, our bosses or our clients. Many times when we find fault in others, we’re actually looking in the mirror. This should be seen as a gift rather than an irritation.

I recently read an article in the August 2006 issue of Body & Soul Magazine that reflects ways in which you can tell if your Mind-Body-Spirit connection is maturing. You will know that your M-B-S IQ is climbing when you:

  • Notice that you’re less bothered by the ups and downs of your life
  • Remember to ask for grace and guidance from Source and are open to receive information from surprising sources
  • Realize that you’re happier and more peaceful when you stop trying to control every situation and remain neutral
  • Recognize that living from your own essence is more important than getting the approval of others
  • Find it easier to forgive your parents, your ex-spouse, the kid who bullied you in high school, and yourself
  • Wake up some mornings feeling grateful for no good reason
  • Treat feelings of anger, jealousy and blame as signals to do self-inquiry and take time to look into what’s behind those feelings
  • Develop inner practices like meditation, mindful awareness, and silent contemplation
  • Know how to tap an inner source of personal strength and resourcefulness so that you’re less fearful of the situations and outcomes that used to scare you
  • Experience feelings of equality, kinship and concern for other people, animals and the earth
  • Are less afraid to speak your truth – and know how to do it gently
  • Above all, feel a growing connection to your own unshakable essence, your inner self, your Buddha nature or whatever name you use to identify your spirit

As your M-B-S IQ continues to climb, so will your feelings of self worth. Strong feelings of self worth are the path to finding your life’s direction. So take time to work on increasing your M-B-S IQ. You’ll become more peaceful, passionate and life will seem more enriching.
