Healthy Tidbits
Can You Believe....
Evidence appears overwhelming that the consumption of dark chocolate can improve both glucose metabolism and blood pressure. (In the available research the study done showed that white chocolate had no affect).
Cocoa is rich in flavanoids a class of Polyphenal found in plants – researchers believe the regulation of nitric oxide production by the flavanoids found in dark chocolate could explain it’s effects on insulin sensitivity and blood pressure.
For text of study, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition March 2005; 81(3): 541-542
Wise Choices to Chocolate Selection:
- Only eat dark chocolate
- Milk chocolate is a No – adding milk cancels the antioxidant effects
- Don't over-do it – chocolate, even dark, still contains large quantities of sugar.
- Can find antioxidants elsewhere also – apples, grapes, most veggies, blueberries
Your Eating Habits Affect the Environment
Being a vegetarian has its pros and cons but one thing for sure, heavy meat eaters have a detrimental affect on the environment.
- Animals raised for food produce 130 times more excrement than the entire population. Affect: gets into streams and contaminates groundwater.
- Nearly 90% of all agricultural land in the US is used to raise animals. Affect: 20 times more land is required to feed a meat-eater than to feed a vegetarian.
- Nearly 50% of all water consumed in the US is used for livestock. Affect: you save more water by not eating a pound of beef than by not showering for 6 months.
- Raising animals for food requires more than 30% of all raw materials and fossil fuels used in US. Affect: one hamburger patty uses enough fossil fuel to drive a small car 20 miles.
- 70% of US grain and soybeans are fed to livestock. Affect: cutting 5% consumption of beef would free up 12 million tons of grain needed to feed every single person on the planet that suffers from hunger.

Take That CoQ10
Studies show CoQ10 is necessary for energy production and immune response. CoQ10 is absolutely needed in highest concentration in heart cells: Heart benefits are high – reduces high blood pressure, helps keep heartbeat regular! Take it daily.
Toxins – Root Cause of Disease?
If allowed to accumulate in the body, tissues and organs, toxins can make you sick.
Toxic build up is dangerous to the body and some research indicates it can lead to cancer. According to a Essential Cleansing special report from Dr. L. Smith, MD of Gainesville, Florida “when cells are stressed long enough either the nucleus, cytoplasm or membrane may respond (malfunction) in reaction to toxicity. If the cell reproduces and makes other cells that are all malfunctioning in similar ways a small growth may form. When a few more form, you may have a carcinoma or minimal cancer. If left long enough, it may progress to an undifferentiated, highly toxic cancer.”
Best Solution – Detox – clean your filters. Healthy fasting. Drink filter water, eat organic, use air filters and talk to your holistic health practitioner for an effective way to detox. Detoxing can save your life!!

We All Need Enzymes
Taking a high protein enzyme blend should be part of a good digestive enzyme routine. Protease is a category of enzymes that help break down protein. A blend of protease is more effective.
To learn more about enzymes talk to a Naturopathic Health Practitioner. Many local health food stores have a great selection of enzymes and can help you find the best one for you.
Hand Hygiene
- Nothing works better than simple soap and water.
- Washing hands with soap and water was able to kill viruses that cause the common cold, hepatitis A, and other illnesses. (Hand wipes removed only 50% of bacteria from hands).
- Antibacterial soaps were not as effective as regular soap and water.
- Antibacterial soaps are loaded with negative side effects – they are prone to contributing to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Question:
My 13 year old daughter seems to be caught in a cycle of colds, congestion & sinus problems. Our family doctor had her take some antibiotics which worked for a bit, but the symptoms always returned. Any ideas?
Answer:
This is the time of year for the condition you are describing. With the weather so unstable, children are susceptible to colds. Your daughter gets rid of it, then probably picks it up again from other children in the school.
For starters, it would be a good idea to build up her immune system. A good safe immune tonic would be a combination of herbs that would include Astragalus, Reishi Mushroom, Schizandra, Red Clover and Ashwaganda. Best way to take these is in a tincture form though a tea would certainly work.. She should just have to drink four or five cups of it a day. With a tincture, 30 to 40 drops twice a day in a bit of water would be sufficient.
To combat colds and the congestion, look to the herb used by thousands of Americans, Echinacea. At the very beginning of symptoms, begin giving her Echinacea—30 drops three or four times a day. After two days, cut down to 30 drops twice a day.
The following tea is excellent for the Upper Respiratory Tract:
1 oz. each elder flowers, mullein leaves, chamomile flowers, licorice root, and peppermint leaf. Boil a quart of water and pour over the herbs. Steep for half an hour, strain and try drinking a cup every four hours.
If the symptoms include a sore throat, gargle with sage tea mixed with apple cider vinegar. To one cup of strong sage tea (1tbsp. Sage leaf per 8 oz. of water) add ¼ apple cider vinegar. Add a pinch of cayenne, and some sea salt.
For sinus problems and congestion, boil water in a pot, wait until it steams, drop ten drops of Eucalyptus essential oil and five drops of Oregano essential oil, and inhale deeply, preferably with a towel over her head safely near the steam for about 5 minutes. Best to take breaks!
Nasal washes with a Neti pot are highly recommended.
A good natural antibiotic is Colloidal Silver. Try some Chlorophyll for cleansing her system. I also recommend taking Vitamin C, 500 mg., 3-4 times a day.
Hope this is of help.

Acupuncture & Pain
Pain is a warning signal, an alarm that goes off when your body is trying to tell you that something is wrong and out of balance.
Acupuncture is a time-tested, safe, effective, natural and drug-free way to eliminate pain. Unlike other methods for handling pain, there are no side effects.
An acupuncturist's approach to pain.
Acupuncture practitioners recognize that there is vital life energy, called Qi (pronounced “chee”), circulating within the body. Qi flows through a series of pathways called Meridians. Meridians are like rivers within your body. Wherever a river flows, it brings with it water that provides nourishment and life to the land, plants, and people around it. Likewise, Meridians transport life-giving Qi that provides nourishment to every cell, tissue, muscle, organ, and gland in the body.
For example, a kink in a hose will not provide an adequate supply of water to a plant. Eventually it will become unable to thrive, grow and blossom.
Similarly, a blockage to the flow of Qi anywhere in the body will inhibit the amount of nourishment that reaches our cells, tissues, muscles, organs, and glands.
Many things can cause Qi to become blocked:
- Poor diet
- Physical trauma
- Emotional trauma
- Inherited weakness of Qi
- Chemical, physical, and emotional stress
What does acupuncture do?
By inserting fine, sterile needles at specific points, an acupuncturist is able to break up blockages that have hampered the smooth flow of Qi. Once this is done, Qi can freely travel throughout the body, promoting pain-free health, well-being and vitality.
Acupuncture cannot only treat signs and symptoms of pan and discomfort; it can get to the root of what initially caused the problem. When the problem is corrected, your body can begin to heal on deeper levels.

Spring Cleaning
by Mary Jo Ruggieri
Healing occurs when the life-sustaining systems of the body function at peak performance. Unfortunately, with our environment being so toxic and with the pesticides in our food being so prevalent, we have no other choice but to detox and repair our bodies’ support systems.
Healthcare of the future will incorporate all levels of detoxing. Detoxing is for everyone and can change the quality of your life while slowing down the aging process.
Everything needs cleaned or detoxed. How often do you spray down all your filters—car, hot tub and furnace? We clean our house vents, flush our radiators and call Roto Rooter when our pipes get clogged. So what’s wrong with taking this one step further—cleaning our body’s pipes, removing plaque from our arteries and cleansing our colons?
The problem is toxins. Our environment, which has reached high levels of toxic waste, is the main culprit. We cannot get away from the fact that we live in a toxic waste nightmare.
Dr. Christina Scott-Mancrieff, in her book Detox, states that these toxins can affect our ability to think properly; they can produce physical symptoms such as exhaustion or headaches; and create emotional turmoil such as anger and frustration. Following a detox program, she continues, reduces the amount of toxins entering your body and helps your body deal with them better by improving nutrition and enhancing the removal of unwanted waste.
A checklist from Scott-Mancrieff’s book gives us some eye-opening information on toxic elements in our life. How many of these toxic elements are in your life?
Toxic food and drink
- Tea or coffee
- Sodas or fizzy drinks
- Processed meals
- White bread
- Artificial sweeteners
- Non-organic fruits and vegetables (not washed or peeled)
- Processed meats
Environment
- Do you live in a city?
- Do you live near sprayed areas?
- Do you swim in or drink chlorinated water?
- Do you have clothes dry-cleaned regularly?
- Is your plumbing more than 20 years old?
- Do You use pesticides?
- Do you use large amounts of bleach, detergent, household cleaners or disinfectant?
Is everything toxic? No, just a large % of what Americans eat, wear and use!!!
What's so difficult to understand is the correlation of cancer to environmental toxins and the lack of concern about these facts. One in three of us will have cancer in our lifetimes, yet we still sit idle watching the environment deteriorate. It’s more of a shame when we see the rise of cancers in children knowing that it’s often environmentally induced.
Beginning a simple detox plan
- Increase your water intake. This helps keep your fluids moving, flushes your kidneys and keeps your minerals balanced. Drink reverse osmosis bottled water.
- Add one tablespoon of liquid chlorophyll to at least two glasses of water daily. Chlorophyll is a natural antiseptic and removes mucous from the body.
- Brush your skin, using a dry vegetable brush, before you shower. Brush every part of your body stroking toward the heart. This stimulates the skin to begin purging toxins.
- One day per week all day drink organically juiced juice—carrot and/or green vegetables. Eat a large organic salad in the evening. This helps with digestion.
- Drink “green” daily. Spirulina, barley, or wheat grass adds oxygen to the body and eliminates toxins.
- Sweat it out in stream, sauna, or hot Epsom salt baths. Infra-red sauna’s are great!!
- Most healthcare systems, except Western medicine, use some form of fasting as a preventative practice. There are major hospitals in Europe that use controlled fasting for many debilitating diseases.
- A colon cleanse can be as simple as eating specific foods such as grains, organic fruits and vegetables, or could include a more elaborate system of taking certain herbs and digestive enzymes. I find colon cleansing to be one of the most effective ways of healing the body. Most experienced holistic practitioners or naturopathic doctors can advise you on the process.
- Vitamins, minerals, herbs and homeopathics all are useful for detoxing. The antioxidants are primary.
- Fasting – is not about just not eating, but will detox and cleanse the body through resting the digestive system.
Constant tiredness is the main symptom that indicates a person needs to detox. A final quote from Dr. Scott-Mancrieff: “Health is more than the absence of disease, you need to feel well.” It’s your choice.

MUSIC AND SOUND THERAPY
Since vibration is the essence of sound and music and since energy, and thus vibration, is the essence of all things, then it follows that music and sound should be a common element among most, if not all, healing traditions. Examples of the use of sound include: chanting in yoga and meditaion, plainsong, drumming, music played during a bodywork or healing session, and hi-tech meditation soundtracks which employ subliminal pulses and/or affirmation.
MYOFASCIAL UNWINDING
Relaxes and releases restrictions of the connective tissue by following, or unwinding the inherent, non-muscular movement in the body. It can be applied to whole limbs, surface areas, and even structures as small as a tooth.
NATUROPATHY
Brings together various natural healing therapies such as homeopathic remedies, acupuncture and Oriental medicine, massage therapy and hydrotherapy for the treatment of all types of illness. Naturopathic physicians and the individual as an integral whole and the symptoms of disease as indicators of improper functioning and an unhealthy lifestyle. They encourage the individual to take an active part in the healing process through recommended adjustments in lifestyle, diet and exercise and in maintaining the body’s natural state of balance.
NUMEROLOGY
Employs one’s name and birth date to account for intuitive, emotional, mental and physical qualities, as well as for one’s challenges, transitions and karmic development.
MIDWIFERY
The art of assisting at childbirth. Due to rising medical costs and an interest in home delivery and "natural childbirth," there has been a resurgence of interest in midwifery. Certified midwives undergo prescribed courses and training in hospitals and medical schools and are now licensed by the state; lay-midwives do not undergo formal training but are regulated by local statues, which limit what services they may perform.
OSTEOPATHY
Founded by Andrew Still, osteopathy is a system of therapy that emphasizes normal body mechanics and manipulation to correct faulty body structures.
