Inflammation

As scientists delve into the causes of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, asthma, conditions of fibromyalgia and arthritis, they have started to see links between these disorders and an immunological defense mechanism called inflammation. Doctors are finding evidence that inflammation plays a greater role in chronic disease than they thought.

One of the most potent weapons produced by inflammatory cells are free radicals. These free radicals destroy or damage anything that crosses their path. There are antioxidants that can neutralize these free radicals and heal the body with phytonuturients. There are hundreds of phytonutrients:

Flavonoids found in apples, cranberries, strawberries, and grapes eliminate carcinogens, inhibit blood clots, and guard against heart disease and inflammatory conditions such as arthritis.

Carotenoids found in carrots, citrus fruits, tomatoes, peppers, dark leafy greens, corn, pumpkin, and beets are also excellent for combating inflammatory conditions. Lycopene is a type of caroteniod that can prevent skin and lung cancer.

Turpenes found in citrus, spinach, and tomatoes eliminate cancer-causing free radicals and reduce blood levels of LDL cholesterol, lowering heart disease risk.

Allyl Sulfides found in garlic, chives, leeks and onions reduce blood cholesterol and help the liver eliminate cancer-causing free radicals. They also have antibacterial properties.

Isothiocyanates found in cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, bok choy, kale, turnips, mustard greens, and chard trigger enzymes that suppress cancer- related DNA damage

WHY DOES A DIET OF RAW FOOD DECREASE INFLAMMATION?

When cooked food is eaten, Leucocytoiss occurs. Individuals experience a rise in the white blood count, the body's natural immune response. Check your temperature before eating and again 30-40 minutes after eating a meal of cooked good, as the immune system goes into overdrive. This constant defense mechanism of the body has been proven to cause inflammation to many organs of the body. Many people eating a junk food diet have chronic low-grade temperature. A raw food diet consists of organic uncooked fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Its more desired le to eat them uncooked because heating these foods above 110 destroys most vitamins and all of the enzymes.

All fruits, vegetables nuts and seeds contain varying amounts of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Calories are not changed by heat, but fats are transformed to trans fatty acids. Carbohydrates are caramelized, and proteins, which are made up of amino acids, are coagulated- making them difficult to digest and assimilate. The immune system then has to treat them as foreign invaders. This can exhaust the immune system.

Mercury Exposure Has Harmful Health Implications

"Mercury, leaking from your amalgam fillings, compromises your nervous system, immune responses and normal antioxidant functions. It is more dangerous than arsenic," Alternative Medicine Digest Issue 5, B. Goldberg.

Problem Areas

  • Mercury compromises, inhibits, or destroys the protective activity of SOD (Enzyme), which protects against oxidation damage
  • Methyl mercury is produced by bacteria exposed to the mercury on the surface of a dental amalgam and is considered dangerous
  • Other bacteria is stomach and intestine can also convert mercury to a hazardous form
  • Mercury is likely to accumulate in certain organs
  • Nerve cells sustain damage from Mercury at only 0.1 parts per million
  • Some studies suggest that amalgam mercury may be a factor in depression, and anxiety
  • 1987 Swedish Health Board determined that amalgam was unsuitable for use as a dental filling material due to its toxicity
  • 1988 U.S. (EPA) classified removed dental amalgam scrap as hazardous material
  • In December of 1993, Jeneric/ Pentron, Inc. a manufacturer of amalgam, agreed to include a consumer-warning label with their product. This was in response to a suit brought against them under California's Toxicity laws.

Are we ignoring the facts about Mercury problems? Take time to read more. Just get the facts!!!

One thing to do if you have Mercury fillings (besides getting them replaced, which may be an option) is to use Chlorella. Chlorella helps detox Mercury from your system.

Get a hair analysis; it can give you good information on Mercury as well as other toxic metals in your body.

Essential Herbs

Ask Charoula

Dear Charoula,

I was just scheduled to have surgery on September 8. To me this is serious business. Is there something you can recommend that might make things go smoothly?

Answer:

Yes, there are a few things one can do to help the process, whether it is a simple hysterectomy, a knee replacement, or having your gallbladder removed!

Most importantly, immediately start building up your immune system. A strong immune system will help fight post operative infections, will promote speedy healing, and offset the high amount of antibiotics normally prescribed after a surgery. A health immune system will help you get through anesthesia more effectively.

This is also the time to start eating nutritious foods, and supplementing them with health building herbs. I would suggest a mixture of green powders, which should include Spirulina and Chlorella. These are high in vitamins and minerals, but they are also good blood cleaners. Good health builders are Miso, bean, or chicken soups, green veggies such as broccoli, lettuce, kale, squashes, ca couple of servings of salmon a week, carrot/beet juices freshly squeezed.

Add a good tincture, which would include Astragalus, Reishi Mushroom, Ashwaganda, Licorice, Schizandra and Siberian Ginseng. Most of these hers are rich in polysaccharides, which stimulate the immune system and fight infections.

Vitamins C and Beta Carotene are equally important in keeping infections away, and are powerful antioxidants helping raise the power of our immune cells. Take four grams of Vitamin C in 500mg.doses throughout the day. Take 35,000 IUS of Beta Carotene.

A couple of days prior to surgery stop eating proteins like fish and beans. Substitute miso and chicken soups with miso and chicken broths. Juice your veggies. The lighter the foods we take in before surgery, the faster we will recuperate.

Stay away from Ginkgo, Vitamin E and Alfalfa, they may induce bleeding during surgery. Some also say, Garlic, but I don't think a bit of Garlic could harm you. It is a good antibiotic too.

After surgery, be sure you continue with your vitamins, herbs and food regime. Beta Carotene is essential in speeding the healing of tissues. Herbs high in minerals like Horsetail, Oat straw, and Nettles are equally important in healing the tissues. I would add some Echinacea, which is an excellent infection fighter.

A good olive oil extract of St. Johnswort and Calendula applied topically on the skin after thee stitches have been removed helps heal the incision wound. Arnica Oil or cream applied topically helps with bruising and pain/

Right after surgery, add probiotics such as Acidophilus and Bifidus to your daily regime. Antibiotics kill infections but also destroy our intestinal flora leaving us exposed to yeast and urinary tract infections. Probiotics replenish this flora.

A month or two after surgery, it might help to do a detoxification program to rid yourself of possible remnants of anesthesia chemicals, antibiotics, and other medications you might have taken.

Hope this is of help.

Complementary Medicine Surges Forward

Dr. Mary Jo Ruggieri

Medical schools, hospitals and allied healthcare centers seem to be rolling out the red carpet for Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM) practitioners. They are trying to understand these new complementary therapies while attempting to integrate them into existing medical systems.

Some of the questions frequently being asked of the complementary practitioners by western practitioners are:

  1. What would you uniquely offer the patient?
  2. How would you treat a particular set of complaints and symptoms using your modality
  3. What your working relationship would be with the PCP (Primary Care Practitioners) or SCP (Secondary Care Practitioners).
  4. What the medical profession could do better to be partners in healing.

These exact questions emerged from a medical school seminar at The Ohio State University, attempting to bring an integrated view to their students. The panel of nine complementary practitioners each had ten minutes to answer all four questions after being given a case study to review. The CAM providers included practitioners of massage, polarity, acupuncture, herbalism, Reiki and hypnotherapy. With great conviction and information, each of the CAM practitioners presented an effective response. After the seminar each CAM practitioner concluded that the questions were a challenge, but to their surprise, the medical schools asked one of the most important questions of all: WHAT CAN THE MEDICAL PROFESSION DO BETTER TO BE PARTNERS IN THE HEALING PROCESS?? The fact that this question is being asked shows that CAM is experiencing a power surge. It truly is a new day.

WHAT IS COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE?
CAM covers a broad range of healing philosophies, schools of thought, approaches and therapies that mainstream western (conventional) medicine does not commonly use, accept, study, understand or make available. Practices often are used to promote well being or treat health conditions. Many CAM therapies are called holistic, which generally means they consider the whole person, including physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects.

HOW DO PATIENTS USE CAM?
As described by G. Ackerman, M.D., CAM is used "Alone, as an alternative to conventional therapies or in addition to conventional mainstream therapies. With or without the knowledge of their Primary Care Physician."

CAM's POPULARITY IS CONSUMER DRIVEN
A published survey shows that the number of Americans using an alternative therapy rose from 33 percent in 1990 to 42 percent in 1997. People reported using the following therapies most often: herbal medicine, massage, megavitamins, self-help groups, folk remedies, energy healing and homeopathy. Americans spent more than $27 billion on these therapies in 1997, exceeding out-of-pocket spending for all U.S. hospitalizations. (Eisenberg, et al "Trends in Alternative Medicine Use in the United States, 1990-1997." Journal of the American Medical Association November 11, 1998.)

WHY CAM?
Another consumer survey indicated two very important reasons consumers were using CAM. First, they were dissatisfied with conventional medicine. Secondly, these health care alternatives mirrored their own values, beliefs and philosophical orientations toward health and life. This was reported by Astin in "Why Patients Use Alternative Medicine," Journal of the American Medical Association. May 20, 1998.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • 75 out of 117 U.S. Medical schools offer elective courses in CAM. (Eisneberg, Journal of the American Medical Association, 1998).
  • 60% of doctors recommend alternative therapies to their patients at least once.
  • 47% of the doctors in this study reported using alternative therapies for themselves. (Borkan, "Referrals for Alternative Therapies," Journal of Family Practice, 1994)

It might be useful to note that much of the information presented by the Eisenberg study and the Borkan study was presented in the mid 1990's. According to the current data coming out of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, the trends for the use of CAM, and the increase of CAM in medical schools and physician referrals continue to increase significantly since these studies. It is also noted that one of the major increases is the use of energy therapies such as Polarity, Reiki and Therapeutic Touch.

*Compiled by the Art of Well Being.

Acupressure

Is a form of bodywork in which the practitioner uses thumbs, fingers, palms, and elbows to stimulate points along the Chinese energetic meridians of the body? Popular forms include shiatsu and jin shin do.

Advanced Strain and Counterstrain

Is a myofasical release method of smooth (involuntary) muscle tissue using specific positioning and directional pressure from the therapist. Through ASCS it is possible to directly affect and improve bladder spasms, difficulty swallowing, irritable bowel syndrome, and other conditions caused by autonomic nervous system disorders.

Alexander Technique

Uses hands-on guidance and verbal instruction by the practitioner to teach simple, efficient ways of moving. This is a means of improving balance, posture and coordination, and relieving pain. Developed by actor F.M. Alexander after he concluded that his poor posture was responsible for this own chronic voice loss.

Aromatherapy

Aromatic oils from plants are used on the skin, inhaled, or mixed into bathwater. Specific oils, or combinations of oils, are employed to give specific effects such as calming, pain relief, or energizing.

Art Therapy

Uses art-making processes to engage emotional and psychological issues. Both the physical act of making and the image/content of the work can express and heal trauma and visualize desired outcomes.

Audio Neurotechnology

Recorded soundtracks of soothing music are combined with specific frequencies of pulsed binaural sound (a different frequency into each ear via headphones). Modifies the brainwaves to create meditative states.
