Arsenic: The hidden poison in your drinking water- Reviewed by Richard Mesqita America Water Council. (www.aquamd.com/mercola/labtests.cfm)
How does Arsenic get into your drinking water?
- Naturally via soil and rock
- Industrial processes-mining coal- electric power plants
- Used in pesticides and chemicals
The health effects of LOW levels of Arsenic
- Skin Cancer
- Nervous System Damage
- Diabetes
- Circulatory/High Blood Pressure
What is considered a safe level of arsenic?
- EPA has reduced the safe drinking water standard for arsenic to 10 parts per billion- was just decreased from the long current standard of 50 ppb- this decrease goes into effect in January, 2006.
- Past, brief exposure to Arsenic can have long lasting effects.
BE SAFE! Drink only Reverse Osmosis water. You can get a house filter that will filter the water in every faucet of your home.
"Snoozing Is Not Loosing"
SLEEP- You need a minimum of seven to nine hours of sleep a night as an adult.
There is a huge relationship of sleep and the quality of your life.
When you sleep- your body rejuvenates, regenerates, and repairs.

What Your Nails Say About Your Health!
"Nails are made of Keratin, the same protein in the skin and hair…if you have a disease or dysfunction changes will be visible in the same place on all nails. Changes that appear on one nail or are present at different locations rarely indicate disease," says Lehren.
Spooning- Edge of nails curve upward- leaving a spoon-like indentation
* Cause- Iron Deficiency
Blair's Lines- Horizontal Furrows that are whiter than surrounding nail.
* Cause- could indicate acute illness like pneumonia, hepatitis, or malnutrition
Mee's Lines- Run horizontal across nail but not furrows just white lines.
* Cause- Most common Arsenic poisoning (see arsenic article)-Need type blood test
Soft/ Brittle Nails- Nails that break away easily or separate from the nail bed.
*Cause- Early sign of Hyperthyroidism- Need blood test
Pointed Luneela- White semicircles at base of nail that come to a triangular point.
* Cause- may be genetic disorder involving bone, joints or connective tissues
Yellow Nail- Smoking, fungal infection
* Cause- Chemotherapy or Arthritis drugs
Vertical Lines- Ridges that run vertically side-by-side
* Cause- could be lack of absorption
*Dr. Lehren MD is in the department of Dermatology at The University of Pennsylvania
The Egg Myth!
* Eggs are bad for your heart….Not So!
Research indicates eating eggs and oats daily did not increase cholesterol, or increase cardiac risk. (Participants of study ate two eggs or oats every day for six weeks)
Results:
- Egg consumption had no effect on total cholesterol or LDL
- Oat consumption lowered levels of both cholesterol and LDL

Believe It- Human Heart Can Repair Itself!
"Researchers show that the human heart could repair itself"
New England Journal of medicine showed that in heart transplant patients primitive cells from the patient travel to the new heart and grow new muscle tissue and blood vessels.
"There have been hints from animal studies that the cells could migrate-but this is the first demonstrated in a human that it is possible," said John Falunding of National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.

ASK CHAROULA
If you have any questions, please email Charoula at energy@columbuspolarity.com and your questions will be answered via email.
Question:
In the past few months, I have noticed that often, after meals, I suffer from indigestion, which can even become painful. I keep my current diet pretty healthy, mostly vegetables, a little chicken or turkey, fruit. Why is this happening and what should I do about it?
Answer:
Often it isn't what we currently, but rather what our eating patterns were in the past. If you just recently switched to a healthier diet, this may be a disorder, which developed over the years and is now making itself evident. On the other hand, if you have always eaten well, it may be one of three things:
- Your stomach is not manufacturing enough enzymes to break foods down. This is
a common condition as we age, and it can even occur in younger adults
- There is not enough hydrochloric acid, manufactured by cells in the stomach, to
activate the enzymes necessary for digestion.
- There is too much acidity but not enough mucus to counteract it and protect the
stomach lining.
A good test to determine whether there is enough acid in your stomach is to take a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice when you are experiencing pain. If pain goes away, then your stomach does not manufacture enough acid.
Helpful Supplements and Herbs
An enzyme supplement that would include Pancreatic enzyme is probably the most helpful. In the enzyme section of your health foods store, there are several brands. Find one that shows a complete profile of enzymes and take as directed on the label with each meal.
Turmeric (Curcumin) and Bromelain are anti-inflammatories, and will also reduce this condition.
Soothing Herbs That Provide a Protective Coat For The Stomach Lining
Slippery Elm bark, Marshmallow Root, Ginger Root, and licorice… these are all herbs that are considered mucilaginous: they produce a thick liquid that strengthen stomach lining. Licorice also has a mild natural cortisone effect that fights inflammation.
As this condition is often the result of tension and stress, a nice soothing tea of American Skullcap leaves, Hops and Chamomile flowers, taken two to three times a day, will soothe the nervous system. If you have been through considerable amounts of stress, you should probably also add some Siberian Ginseng Root, an adaptogenic, which helps restore the nervous system.
It is preferable you take these herbs as teas. For all barks and roots, place a tablespoon of the mixture of equal parts in a cup of cold water, bring to simmer and simmer for half an hour. For all flowers and leaves, just place a tablespoon of a mixture in a teapot or glass jar and pour a cup of hot water over it, let it stand for half an hour. Polarity Tea is also a good digestive aid.
Above all, watch your diet, do yoga for the stress, get some bodywork, especially Polarity Energetic Touch.
Hope this is of help.

Naturopathic Medicine
Naturopathic Medicine from the beginning of time has been available in one form or another to all people. Naturopathic medicine includes using herbs, homeopathy, nutrition, diet, water, exercise and detoxification to help the body find it's own balance. Naturopathic practitioners may use any combination of these and other therapies to help their clients.
New technologies allow for advanced testing to help determine which therapies will be most effective. Some of the new testing procedures include salvia testing for adrenal, thyroid, female/male hormones and immune function. Extensive stool/saliva can be done for digestive problems such as IBS, Crones and Ulcerative Colitis. Urine testing is now being done to determine neurotransmitter levels (brain chemicals) and the results can help utilize amino acid therapy for aid with depression and anxiety.
Also used to assess nutritional status is a complete blood/urine/hair/stool profile that allows a Naturopath to suggest a very specific supplemental regimen based on each patient's biochemistry. Retesting then allows for continued monitoring.
In the light of recent problems with prescription drugs many people are looking for other ways to improve and maintain their health.
Naturopathic physicians are trained in Naturopathic schools- usually a four-year program, following a B.S. degree in Pre-Med studies. They specialize in working with the whole person-not symptom-based treatment. Many work with a broad range of problems, including fatigue, Fibromyalgia, hormone imbalances, digestive disturbances, stress related problems, mood deregulation, depressed immune function and blood sugar issues. Most Naturopaths work closely with other natural health care workers such as Massage Therapists, Rolfers, Polarity Therapists and Acupuncturists.
Naturopathic Healthcare allows people to choose a drug-free way to get and stay healthy. Current and ongoing research is revealing the safety and effectiveness of long-used herbal nutritional and homeopathic remedies

Body Work and Stress Reduction
Stress and stress-related diseases have reached epidemic proportions in our modern day culture. "The leading causes of mortality in industrialized nations have shifted from the infectious illnesses that were prevalent at the beginning of this century to the chronic and lifestyle related illnesses now accounting for the majority of deaths." Stress affects everyone and stress disorders are based upon a slow and developmental accumulation of psychological and physical stress responses throughout the life of the individual. Stress certainly can become the silent killer!
Potentially, one of the most negative results of excessive levels of stress is the effect on immune responses. Stress is now being linked to and implicated in the pathogenesis of cancer as well as other dysfunctions related to autoimmune diseases such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, asthma, and yeast infections.
The effects of stress are physical! The voluntary nervous system sends messages to your muscles to fight or flee. In response to this immediate tension in your body, the autonomic nervous system, which regulates involuntary body functions, will prepare you by sending extra blood to your muscles. It will also slow digestion, mental clarity and some organ functions. There are also hormonal responses that produce many hypersensitive effects on the body. In essence, your body becomes a walking war machine preparing for attack and shutting down many vital organ functions you need to maintain health.
According to the American Institute of Stress, 75% to 90% of all visits to physicians involve stress-related complaints. Stress is linked to specific illnesses and research has now proven the relationship between our health and our emotions.
Most individuals have a difficult time recognizing stress in the body until it becomes an obvious problem such as: severe backache, chronic indigestion, headaches, constant colds, lack of energy and often depression. When it reaches the stage of physical and mental imbalances, it has become a problem.
All bodywork such as Massage, and/or Polarity Therapy, become a major factor in helping us to identify where the stress is located in the body. Bodywork will not only identify the stress holding patterns, it will educate the body in returning to balance before it becomes a major physical problem.
Research has shown that body work: 1) helps appropriate movement of fluids through the system including lymph, blood in the arteries and veins, glandular secretions and removal of toxic waste, 2) increases muscle response such as elasticity of connective tissue, diminishes muscle fatigue, and increases muscle energy, 3) restores vital organ function including respiration and circulation, 4) increases neural activity benefiting both the central and peripheral nervous systems, 5) increases the balance in reflex patterns and 6) restores energy and general balance to stress overload.
Bodywork restores our coping mechanisms and allows for physical and emotional balance to occur before it becomes a major problem.
Each individual is a unique and complex interaction of body, mind and spirit. "Illness can best be understood as a disturbance within the dynamic balance of these relationships. The state of health exists when these elements function in harmony." Bodywork, which promotes this harmony, is not just a luxury, but is fast becoming a significant part of our integrative approach to health and wellness.

PILATES
Created over eighty years ago by Joseph H. Pilates. Initially popular with dancers and other performers, the Pilates method has become popular in the fitness world. Exercises performed on the floor, or on specialized equipment, Pilates coordinate mind, body and breath to develop sleek and functionally strong abdominal muscles, a strong and supple back, and aligns the shoulder girdle.
POLARITY THERAPY
Polarity Therapy has been defined as a natural health care system based upon universal principles of energy. It assumes that illness is caused by an imbalance or block in the bipolar energy field. The interrelation of the three principles of attraction, repulsion, and neutrality are viewed as the basis for every aspect and phenomena of life, including one's experience of heath, wellness, and disease. The application of Polarity Therapy attempts to realign balance and recharge the overall level of energy through energetic touch, energetic food awareness, energetic exercise, and lifestyle education. www.columbuspolarity.com
